CONGRATULATIONS, 2011 GRADUATES!!!
Let me just say to all my friends who finished or about to finish high school (including my younger brother Adrian, round of applause, please!) and college (you guys are just too many to mention): CONGRATULATIONS!
It's the beginning of a new season for all of you, and I can't wait for what this appointed time has in store for everyone. As a tribute, I actually visited your Facebook accounts, got your most ridiculous pictures so I can post them here and embarrass you in my blog. Hehe.
No, I was just kidding. I made this blogpost for YOU, just because I LOVE YOU! So if you guys are the only readers of this post, I'm glad. But if more people read it, I want those people to know that you guys drew out sweat and blood for this very day to come. You really deserve it!
Congratulations to all of you! I'm excited to hear your news about your first job, your first salary *ehem*, and many other firsts!!! I still want to be part of your after-school journey.
Now, this makes me want to go back to my own Graduation Day. Wasn't it only a year ago when some of my friends and I were still in school?
And then I also had my big day... along with the other thousands of graduates from PLM.
All four years of THAT, that ended in just one day. I can't even remember the exact day! Can someone zoom in on my certificate right there? Anyway, a month later I got hired as an admin assistant.

I don't care who that girl is-- I'm proud of you, Aki! Off to PMMA, you! |
Ever-so-cute Pawee and her parents. I'm so glad you decided to stay in PLM-- and of course not forever! |
Hsam ( next to Eunice on the photo before this) Gamzie, Rossielle, Grace, Eunice, Ariane and Mylene-- I used to hang around these guys a lot... and I was a year older than them! |
Sweetita! No I didn't get your graduation day picture because you deserve THIS much more! Love yah! |
Lyn, Drew, Ariane and Grace! From sophomore year til the last year, we were FRIENDS. And you guys are friends for keeps. :') |

Busy being part of the student council... or maybe I was not busy being council member, nor a student. :-p |
I was so used to TV appearances... THEN. |
Who said school wasn't fun? A lot of paper folding... and shredding. |
I thought I was on top of the world as I deposed whoever was imposing on me what to do in life! |
April 2010... seems only yesterday. |
Here I am, a year later.
A lot have changed when I moved on from college to being a single professional. All my life--well, just 15 years of it--spent inside the four corners of the school ground, preparing as much as I can for the real world. Ironically, in just one day, all the things that I got used to had changed. That one day was my Graduation Day.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? You might be asking. THIS is what I'm talking about; there are two responses people can have towards GRADUATION:
I've had the same response as the first one, back when I was younger. I thought, "You march down the isle, get a document--just a really expensive piece of paper with people's signature on it--that says you're smart enough and fit to work. You spend thousands of pesos for that day, and what? You feel like you're never prepared enough for after-college life."
I still feel the same--a little--about it. But I had to make sense of what the hustle on Graduation Day is all about; that JUST ONE DAY which stomped out most of the things you learned in school. I looked up its synonym online and Thesaurus.com says "commencement". From its root word, it means it's the point at which something begins.
Going through my friends' Facebook albums and profiles, a lot of them were so happy to say, "Finally, it's FINISHED!" But maybe, just maybe, the thing we really have to celebrate is the new beginning.
Some of you who are reading this may have also already finished school already (with or without diploma). Hear me out in this; no matter how grandiose or simple is the commencement exercise of the university or college you attended, you've got to admit, THAT DAY was the beginning of something you never really expected. In school, everything was calculated, measured, rated--they tried to make everything predictable. Maybe some of your teachers have even promised you that they will prepare you for the real world that is out there. But I'm telling you, when rubber meets the road, the things you practiced your entire life and the things you believe in will be tested by things your teachers never taught you in school.
What I am most glad about, however, is that this new beginning is an opportune time for new learnings. I hate to tell you this, but projects, assignments, readings and learnings will not stop in school. Your first job is like your freshman year YET AGAIN. But don't be discouraged! Remember, it's a new beginning. It's a chance to unlearn things you thought were right, and an opportunity to hone talents and skills you never thought you had when you were still in school.
I say congratulations, not just because it is finished, but also for the new beginning! Cheers to the graduates of 2011!
My AWESOME workmates--so privileged to be part of this team. |

"It's just a ceremony."
or
"It's THE ceremony!"

Happy graduation anniversary to us! It's been a year - how that happened, I'm not sure! Hahahaha. And congratulations to batch 2011.
ReplyDeleteHaha! It's a miracle to me, too! 1 year over... decades more to go!
ReplyDeleteNicely written. Indeed graduation is a beginning of another chapter. A new chapter where education background is but a jumpstart of a good career. And determination and passion is the key for a better future.
ReplyDeleteThanks 5:31 Man! Nice username :D Even nicer explanation. :)
